Caracas Witnesses Protests Over Maduro’s Detention
Simultaneous rallies were held by both pro-government and opposition groups as the country navigates a precarious change in leadership under Acting President Delcy Rodriguez.
Backers of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) took to the streets in the capital demanding the release of their detained ex-leader.
The demonstration was organized by PSUV Secretary General Diosdado Cabello alongside street mobilization leader Nahum Fernandez, and they assembled early Tuesday to show their resistance. In declarations to supporters, Fernandez insisted “We will protest with conviction that justice will prevail,” and reiterated that their faction would stay mobilized to give “absolute support” to the administration. Though they pressed for Maduro’s reinstatement, party figures also stressed their allegiance to Rodriguez — who was appointed president on Jan. 5 — as a means to preserve order “in any scenario.”
Parts of the gathering also urged extensive compensation for individuals who suffered from state-enforced brutality, insisting on accountability for senior officials tied to past infractions and pledging that abuses of human rights would not happen again.
Maduro remains held in a federal facility in the United States while legal procedures against him continue in New York.
He is confronting multiple serious accusations brought by US authorities, including charges of conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, unlawful possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess illegal weaponry.
