Trump Announces Plans to Visit Venezuela
Trump, speaking to reporters at the White House, confirmed his plan but gave no timeline. “I’m going to make a visit to Venezuela … We haven’t decided (when),” he said.
The president lauded the rapport between the United States and Venezuela’s interim leadership under Delcy Rodriguez, saying Washington and Caracas are “working together very closely,” especially on energy matters. “We have a very good relationship,” Trump said, asserting that significant U.S. oil companies are now operating there and the collaboration is generating substantial income. “The relationship we have right now with Venezuela is, I would say, a 10.”
Pressed on whether the U.S. formally recognizes Rodriguez’s government, Trump replied: “We have done that. We’re dealing with them.” He also emphasized rising oil output and U.S. refining of Venezuelan crude, calling bilateral ties “strong.”
This diplomatic shift follows a high-profile visit by U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright to Caracas this week to evaluate Venezuela’s oil industry and discuss a broad overhaul of the sector aimed at rebuilding the economy and reintegrating its vast petroleum reserves into global markets.
The backdrop to the changing relationship was a dramatic political upheaval on Jan. 3, when U.S. forces captured former President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in a military operation in Caracas and transferred them to federal custody in New York. Rodriguez assumed interim leadership and has since moved toward normalizing ties with Washington, including on energy cooperation.
